The only downside to stateful inspection firewalls are they operate at a higher level. and require more computing resources. A proxy firewall is also referred to as an application-level gateway or cloud firewall. These firewalls are supplied via proxy devices or cloud solutions. The proxy firewall operates by directly connecting to data packets attempting to enter your network and inspect the data. They do not let data to connect directly to your network before inspection but act as a welcoming committee before data can even reach your network. Proxy firewalls perform a deep inspection and check the external and internal information for potential threats. If the data passes the proxy firewall inspection, it can connect to your network. This is beneficial because it creates an extra barrier between your network and the client (the original source of the data attempting to enter your network). Since proxy firewalls are so thorough in the inspection, they can significantly slow down your network.
5. Next-Generation Firewall
All the newer firewalls are referred to as “next-generation firewalls”. But they all utilize many of the same tactics as the firewalls listed above at different levels. They mix and match techniques in order to provide your network with superb security. The drawback to the next-generation firewalls is you need to verify the specific techniques and protection ability the different next-generation firewalls use as there is not one sole definition for next-generation firewalls.
